What is Step Over?
The Step Over is an easy calisthenics leg exercise where you step or side-hop over a raised platform from one side to the other. It primarily targets the quadriceps, glutes, and calves while improving balance, hip mobility and light explosive power for beginner-friendly conditioning.
How to Do Step Over
- Set up platform: Stand beside a stable elevated surface about knee height; check it won’t move. Keep feet hip-width and maintain upright posture.
- Place working foot: Put your closest foot firmly on top of the platform for stability; weight balanced, toes forward and hips square to the surface.
- Load and hinge: Bend the planted knee slightly and hinge at the hips while engaging your core to load the working leg before the jump.
- Explosive side jump: Drive through the planted foot and perform a controlled side jump over the platform, swinging the free leg to clear the surface.
- Land safely: Land softly on the opposite side with knees slightly bent, absorb impact through hips and knees, and keep knees aligned over toes.
- Reset and repeat: Stabilize on the platform or ground, return to start or switch sides as needed. Rest between sets and prioritize steady form.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of the Step Over?
Step Over develops unilateral leg strength, balance and hip mobility while conditioning calves and glutes. It’s low-equipment, beginner-friendly, and helps improve lateral coordination and light explosive power for running or sport-specific movements.
What common mistakes should I avoid when doing Step Overs?
Avoid using an unstable platform, letting the knee cave inward, twisting the torso, or landing stiff-legged. Don’t choose excessive height; maintain controlled jumps, soft landings and proper knee alignment to reduce injury risk.
How can I progress or regress the Step Over?
To regress, slow the movement, lower platform height or perform controlled step-ups. To progress, increase platform height, add tempo or repetitions, or perform lateral box hops and weighted step-overs for greater power and load.
